Tabsofficial Project Management Learnings

Learning has been always fun to me; it is like a basket filled with fresh fruits. Why? I simply know new things each and every second of my life. As an IT student in the University of the Immaculate Conception, I indulge myself into learning as UIC’s environment is centered into fun learning education. As I advance to a new higher level, I am introduced into a fun subject that elevates my interest. Moreover, learning new things from these distinct subjects in college is quiet cool, learning new stuff and all.

Talking about subjects? In our third year class we have this subject; my friends call it “PM”. What was this PM? I was so curious. Later, our professor explained it to us. So it was Project Management, a pretty helpful subject that will build a character among us juniors. How to take and manage a project? But it didn’t end there. It began more interesting when our professor gave us an assignment to interview a professional in the industry to share their experiences. I was stunned really. I am a shy type person and I don’t know really how to get along in different people. But most likely I made it; I dig up my share in the group as it was in by three’s. So the first thing I learned is before you can manage any of these projects you, yourself should be confident enough to manage and get along to different people in the industry. It was fun and I got a lot of learning too with the person we’ve interviewed.

Next, was a day of grouping, we were grouped and each of the member has their own tasks. That day we’ve learned the value of team work, if one fails the group fails as well, so there is no choice but to help one another in the team and work effectively according to the tasks given. From time to time, activities were performed by group and led by a leader which is the project manager; he manages all the people and resources in the team. Unfortunately, I was one of theses people assigned to do things and led the group. Now, I think I build myself off my shelf. I mean, I was way too confident about myself unlike the last time. I began to notice that I became flexible. I now understood that a leader is not the literal leader I knew for the past years, the one who only points and point things out. But these people are only the bridges bringing the members to do the projects for its success.

A day of requirements, projects here and there as if it was already finals, yet it was only midterms. It is so funny that we can’t get things done. By then we remembered a lesson about Time Management, a timeline, a schedule of doing things. From there I and my team and friends got things done in no time.

Lastly, I have realized that Project Management is not just a subject; it is also a builder of character and material of values plus learning with in the students taking it up. I thought that if I dropped out to that class or not took it up, I would be most probably be ignorant of the environment that I will soon be joining.
